Favorite Math YouTube Videos

In my classroom, technology consists of a document camera, projector, and some old computers. So the you tube videos and BrainPop videos are the main way I incorporate technology into my lessons. This morning I thought I'd hop on my blog and share some of my favorite math videos for counting. Posting videos is something new for me. Hopefully this works. I found this very simple tutorial that explained how to embed a video https://support.google.com/blogger/answer/80767?hl=en. We'll see when I click that "publish" button. Fingers crossed!

My kiddos really liked the music that goes along with this one:

We counted to 100 during calendar using this video once in a while, just for something different:

This was my favorite. I liked the physical activity it incorporates into counting:

I haven't used this one yet, but I thought I might have my kiddos use their place value blocks and add one along with the video. What do you think?

Last year my kiddos had a lot of fun with this shape song. We did it a few times at the start of our geometry lessons.

Do you have any favorite videos you use in your classroom?

Vegas Recap

Last week was one of the best weeks ever! I was at the I Teach K conference in Las Vegas with so many awesome teachers. I'd never been to a teaching conference before but I can tell you that this won't be the last!
My best teacher friend and I arrived Sunday and went to see
at Treasure Island. If you've never been I highly recommend it! It's spectacular and well worth the price.
Monday started with a keynote from Debbie Clements. She's just amazing! I don't know how I'd never heard her music before, but after her keynote I went to another of her session and came home with 2 of her books and 3 cd's. One goal for next year was to incorporate more music. This will be a great start!
That evening we saw Ron Clark! Yes, that Ron Clark. I was in awe of his passion for what we do. He was amazing and funny and I can't wait to read another of his books. Oh yeah, I also got my book signed.
Standing in line to get that autograph I met some fabulous teachers! We ended up have a couple dinners together and exchanged email to keep in touch. Here they are
These ladies are terrific! We became good friends, "new best friends" as Kris put it, very quickly. One of them teaches in Bahrain which was so interesting to hear about. One teaches elementary math and actually turned her classroom into a hospital like Ron Clark talks about in one of his books. Talk about going the extra mile! And another teaches K and does a summer cooking class for kids on her own! My friend April teaches K and does such great things with her class. I've tried to talk her into blogging... and then there's me on the right. I hope we can all get together at another I Teach K!

At the blogger meet-up I got to meet these terrific bloggers
and wish I'd been able to meet everyone who was there
A special thanks to Rachel and Natalie from What the Teacher Wants and Teachers Pay Teachers for organizing and sponsoring the event!
And a thanks to SDE for having Elvis in the house too.
I Teach K was everything I'd hoped for- meeting new friends and getting fresh exciting ideas for the new school year. I'm looking forward to going again soon.

Before I leave you today, I want to add that there are about 10 spots left in the Alphabet Exchange an then I'll have to close it so that there are complete groups. Thanks to everyone who has singed up already! Just click on the button below to sign up for get more info.

I'm off to dinner soon with our nephew who is visiting from Dubai. It will be so good to see him again!
Have a great evening!

The Alphabet Letter Exchange is Ready to Go!

I sure hope you are having a wonderful summer and had a fantastic 4th of July too (if you're in the US). We spent the holiday at my brother-in-law's enjoying the company, BBQ, and fireworks.
Now that I'm back home I wanted to get the Alphabet Letter Exchange up and running. It was so much fun last year! This project started as the Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom Alphabet Letter Exchange (I just shortened the name this year.). As a first grade teacher I just love this book as a way to review letters at the start of the year and this project fits wonderfully with it.
This year things will run almost the same way. One change I did make was to the way you sign up. Instead of signing up in the comments below, I'm trying out Google forms. My husband tested it out and it worked so I hope it does when you try it too. I've never used it before so hang in there with me...

Here's how it works:

1. Your class will be assigned a letter of the alphabet and put into a group with 25 other teachers. Each teacher would have their class decorate 26 of that letter. A template like the letter below will be provided. You'll print it on cardstock and have your class decorate it. Decorate it however you like, just have fun and get creative!
2. You'll need to mail 25 of the letters to the members of your group and you'll keep one. Each teacher is responsible for their own postage charges. At the end of the project you should have a complete, unique, student-made alphabet!

3. You could also include a short letter about your class, school, and where you live. This is optional.

The project will run from about September 1st-30th to give everyone time to get back to school, decorate, and mail their letters.

I'd love to have you participate! Just a little favor, though, please sign up only if you really intend to follow through with the project. It is heartbreaking to kids and teachers alike to end up with an incomplete alphabet. If you do want to participate, just click on the button below and fill out the form!

Just a couple more little things:
I'm planning to stop sign-ups about August 1st so I can get the lists out. Also, I'll be in touch via email to give you any updates and send out the templates.

As of late on July 26, the exchange is full. If you'd like to be on a waiting list, please go ahead and send me an email. Thanks!

I've also made this button if you want to share about this exchange on your blog. The more, the merrier! I'm so happy to have you along on the wonderful bloggy adventure!
